Meet the Founder
Dr. Tempestt S. Latham, EdD, MPH, CHES, RDH
Founder, EmpowerEdD Health & Education Collective
Dr. Tempestt's passion for health literacy began chairside. During 15 years as a dental professional in inner-city New Haven, Connecticut, she saw every day that a patient's health often depended less on the care they received and more on whether they understood it. Patients who understood their diagnosis, their options, and their next steps were better able to take charge of their health. Patients who didn't were too often left behind.
That realization shaped every step that followed. It led her to pursue advanced degrees in public health and education, building the expertise to turn health information into something people can actually use. It carried into executive leadership roles, where she worked to make health literacy part of how organizations operate rather than an afterthought. And it inspired her to write Hudson's Great Dental Adventure, a book that brings her dental roots and health education expertise together to make oral health clear, approachable, and fun for young readers.
Today, that same commitment is the foundation of EmpowerEdD. Dr. Tempestt founded the company with one mission: to enhance health literacy so people are empowered to understand, navigate, and advocate for their own health. Through curriculum design, training, and speaking, she helps schools, healthcare organizations, and associations create health education that is evidence-based, culturally grounded, and built to be used, not just distributed.
She is also the creator of Inside Voice, a collection of shirts and stories that brings honest health conversations into everyday life, because health literacy can start anywhere, even with a T-shirt.
